THE STORY SO FAR - - -

SEARCHING FOR A SUITABLE WORK has been a long, frustrating task. While we hoped to do a musical this year, finding a musical director has proved impossible. We offered this role to a number of music people but without success. We looked far & wide, leaving no turn un-stoned. Next year, well that’s a different story, and it’s music. A Broadway show, along with a musical director, has been lined up for next year and so this year, we will do a play instead.

GREAT NEWS!

Last year, we joined the New Zealand Music Theatre Society, Northern Area. Each year, NAPTA (Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards) announce nominations for various categories of theatre. The winners were announced at a gala black tie evening on February the 18th at the Bruce Mason Centre. Well, our production last year of ‘The Whales of August’ was nominated for SEVEN Awards! They were:

Best play ---WINNER!
Best Director – Barry Spring
Best Actress in a play – Lynn Webster
Best Actress in a play – Anne Sheffield ---WINNER!
Best Actor in a play – Bruce Weston ---WINNER!
Best Set – Peter Carr
Best Props – Shirley Spring & Mary Boyd ---WINNERS!

I am sure you all are as excited by this as we are. The seven nominations for our play are an affirmation of the hard work and dedication. To receive them at all is a wonderful boost to Pilgrim. Our thanks and congratulations go to all those who were nominated and to our four winners announced at the gala event. And remember too, ‘Best Play’ includes the whole cast and the production team including front of house and back stage crew.

THE JULY 2006 PRODUCTION WILL BE

STEEL MAGNOLIAS
By Robert Harling
Directed by Bruce Weston

Whether they are celebrating or hurting, friends stand by you. Six small town women share the good times with enthusiasm and support each other with deep emotional strength when faced with testing. A play that portrays the wonderful community of a small town that could be right here. You may remember the film but the play has a special warmth of it’s own. Our small theatre is ideal for this intensely personal glimpse into the lives of these delightful women.
