NEWSLETTER May 2010
Hello everyone. Warm greetings to you all as we approach the cold of winter. We have several exciting pieces of information in this newsletter, including two lots of auditions for our active members, and notice of our AGM for all members.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Pilgrim’s annual general meeting will be held on Monday 21 June 2010 at 7.30pm at 3 Notley Street, Westmere. Note the change of address from our usual venue. All members are invited to attend. The agenda will include election of the committee for the coming year, scrutiny of our financial position and setting of subscription levels. We look forward to seeing you there.
AUDITIONS for An Inspector Calls
Auditions for our main production this year will be held on Sunday 4 July 2010 at 2pm at the Theatre Pitt, 78 Pitt Street, City. Richard Purro, our director, has provided the following information for those thinking about auditioning.
Cast of Characters
Arthur Birling (50's) Energetic, successful industrialist. He likes the sound of his own voice a bit too much, so tends to be pompous.
Sybil Birling (50's) His wife. Strong-willed, self-assured matriarch of the family. She comes from money and believes unreservedly in the class system.
Sheila Birling (20's) Their daughter. Pretty, privileged and naive. She has a conscience but she will have to overcome her background to find it.
Eric Birling (20's) Spoiled and prone to sullenness. Seems almost to enjoy being the poor little rich boy. There may be more to him than meets the eye.
Gerald Croft (20's/30's) Sheila's fiance. Scion of an industrialist, wealthier and more powerful than the Birlings. Extremely well-bred, but perhaps too smooth.
Edna (20's) The Parlourmaid. This is a tiny but important role. A girl who has been trained to know her place.
The Inspector (40's/50's) A man who has seen every aspect of human behaviour. A touch world-weary, but he has a job to do, and he's a man who gets the job done. His tools are his cleverness, astuteness and a bone-dry sense of humour. He will not be intimidated.
For those of you who are actors, we hope to see you there!
SEASON
Our season for An Inspector Calls will be from 15-25 September 2010.
GALA NIGHTS
For the first time, Pilgrim is offering gala nights to groups wishing to book the theatre for fund-raising events. The potential is for organizations to raise a significant sum and this is how it works:
· Maximum theatre seating 75 persons
· Fee for the night payable to Pilgrim $750 ($10 per ticket)
· Organisations pay us this flat fee and then charge whatever they like as a ticket price. Whatever they make over and above the $750 becomes their profit.
· Interval refreshments are their responsibility and this enables them to raise more funds if they want to. (No alcohol permitted)
Gala night bookings are available for Thursday 16, Friday 17, Saturday 18, Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 September at 8pm. This offer remains open until all gala nights are taken up or until bookings for the general public open on 1 September. Please pass this information on to any groups you know of who are seeking fund raising opportunities. Thanks!
TOURING PLAY TO THE CHURCHES
We intend offering a 20-minute play as a sermon slot for churches during the month of August this year. The play, written by David Hines, has an environmental theme. Imagine King David standing in awe of the stars and then discussing them with Edwin Hubble (of the Hubble telescope) in the 20th century!
Auditions Friday 4 June 7.30pm, 3 Notley St, Westmere). For bookings, phone Marion Hines 3766 583.
Subscriptions for 2010
Thank you to those of you who have already paid your subscriptions for 2010. Subscriptions for 2010 of $15 for single or $25 for a couple or a family are due. Please post to our Memberships Secretary, Kathy Lobb, at PO Box 41-453, St Lukes, Auckland.
WANT TO JOIN IN THE FUN??
If you, or any friends you know, are interested in taking a more active role there are plenty of opportunities this year with Pilgrim. Why not join in the fun? No experience is necessary for many of our activities, especially the backstage or front of house ones. Here are some ways you can take a more active role –
- Four actors required for touring play in August (two men and two women)
- Actors for An Inspector Calls – auditions on 4 July at 2pm
- Support crew for touring play in August – projector operator etc.
- Set building or painting – August, September
- Front of House assistance for An Inspector Calls at Theatre Pitt in September
Phone Marion Hines to join in the fun or for more information – 3766 583.
