Newsletter March 2011

Warmest greetings from the Pilgrim Committee to all of our members and friends.  We are conscious of the fact that for those in or connected to those in Christchurch, the year has not started well.  Our thoughts are with you at this very sad and difficult time.

PILGRIM  COMMITTEE

In response to the last newsletter we welcome Tara Solomon as a new committee member.  Tara played the young Sheila Birling in our recent production of An Inspector Calls and works for an organization called Christians Against Poverty.  Great to have you on board Tara!

Additional committee members would also be enthusiastically welcomed so if you know of anyone looking to be more involved in theatre, please phone Marion Hines 376 6583.

THEATRE  AWARDS  FOR  AN  INSPECTOR  CALLS

We are delighted to report that Paul Norell Active Image(who played Arthur Birling) was awarded the NAPTA prize for best actor in a play at the Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards last week.   Nominations were also received for Tara Solomon and Anne Sheffield for best actress in a play and Pilgrim for best play.  We were unsuccessful in winning these but, hey, it was great to be nominated!  Well done everyone!

The Auckland Community Theatre Trust have also nominated us for five awards.  The nominations are:

  • Best Properties Design: Glenda Matchett
  • Best Set Design: Chris Webb
  • Best Male Actor in a Leading Role: Paul Norrell (Arthur Birling)
  • AMI Award for Drama: 'An Inspector Calls'
  • Best Production: 'An Inspector Calls'

These ACTT awards will be announced on 19 March so we’ll let you know how we get on.

As a final wrap up on An Inspector Calls, we are pleased to report a profit of $1147 on the production.

TOURING  PLAY  TO  THE  CHURCHES

As signalled in our last newsletter, we plan to take Supernova Summit on tour again this year.  We will offer it to churches every Sunday in August.   The play will be directed by Tara Solomon and expressions of interest are invited for the two male and two female parts in the play.  Please email Tara at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are interested in reading for a part.

Churches interested in having the play performed in the sermon slot should contact Marion Hines at Ph 376 6583.

VENUE  FOR  MAIN  PRODUCTION

Plans are well underway for our musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat  by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice.  We are very excited to announce that the venue for the production will be the Pitt Street Methodist Church, next door to the Theatre Pitt, our usual venue.  Performing in the church itself provides greater audience capacity and a bigger stage for the performers.  Season dates are 26 October to 5 November 2011.

LOOKING  FOR  A  TECHNICAL  CHALLENGE?

Given the slightly unusual setting for our musical we are looking for technical help to stage Joseph.  In particular, the following three roles are open to offers:

  • Set designer
  • Lighting designer
  • Sound engineer

Please contact our Production Manager, Mary Boyd, if you are able to offer expertise in any of these areas and would like an interesting challenge for 2011!  Mary’s phone is 480 5028.
